an artist’s statement…
Artist is one of the many hats I wear, along with musician, writer, lover, fighter, one of the masses, and so much more through the variety of life.
As a joyful and gender-deviant woman, I work at exploring expressions of culture, sex, gender and sexuality across boundaries of social context, diversity, visibility and marginalization. I draw inspiration from great irregular people across culture and history. My hope is to play a part in the reshaping our shared social constructions of gender, sex and sexuality, in a way that makes movement towards living more justly and in right relation to each other a shared reality. There are times when I reach this highly actuated ideal and there are times when I must pull back my art, my voice, to myself as it become a tool of personal transformation in times of necessity. I cannot draw distinct boundaries between my art as personal expression and political statements. As an artist-designer that labored for many years under a didactic split between art and design, I now work at an energized space for me where disciplines are at crossings, employing the mediums of ceramics, photography and digital-design technologies.
Many of my inspirations are queer, feminist, and other related theologians, psychologists, artists, musicians, cultural theoreticians and critical writers. I draw inspiration from artists of long ago, artists of today, and my secret heroes, imagining their contexts, bound by my own experiences, bringing this to bear as praxis in my life and in the art that I make.
